Do you want to take your dog out for a walk and let him run free – bur fear he might get lost.  That has happened to me on so many occasions and I decided to check out the hype around dog GPS tracking systems.  Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to spot your furry friend on your smart device if they managed to escape your sight and not fear that you will lose your pet forever. Sounds dramatic, but it sure is the case out of personal experience and this was the answer to what I was looking for.

1.    How do Dog Trackers work

Cellular trackers

The transmitter in cellular trackers has a built-in GPS chip that determines where your pet is by sending information from GPS satellites in space, measuring the distance between the GPS chip and the closest GPS satellite. The signal then pings cellular towers, sending your pet's GPS coordinates directly to your smartphone. The smartphone app interprets your pet's GPS coordinates and then displays your pet's position on a map.

Radio trackers

Radio trackers depend on a handheld transceiver rather than an app to locate the pet's GPS coordinates. The transceiver sends requests to the transmitter on the pet's collar regarding the pet's whereabouts.  The info is then relayed back to the transceiver in one of two ways. Either it will transmit the pet's position in the form of coordinates to the transceiver. The transceiver then translates the coordinates into the pet's position on a map. Or if the module doesn't have a GPS chip, the transmitter will relay the pet's position in terms of distance and direction from the transceiver. This type of GPS dog tracker is a good choice for areas with poor cellular reception.

Bluetooth trackers

Bluetooth trackers connect to your smartphone via a Bluetooth connection. These trackers work through an app that will pinpoint your pet's location in relation to your smart device.

Bluetooth trackers are a good choice for small pets since they are lightweight but do have the shortest range of all the trackers.

2.    Are Dog Trackers safe to use on your dog

You can rest assured that the GPS or the blue tooth device will cause no harm to your pet or to you. Here's why: The GPS tracker uses local cellular networks to send data - therefore it generates and uses electromagnetic fields (EMF). The tracker uses the same technologies that are built into your cell phone.

4.    Do Pet Trackers Work for Cats?

Many of the devices available are a little too big to properly work on cats, or their algorithms just do not take the cats slinky movements into account the way they do a large, lumbering canine. Be sure to consider the size and weight of the tracker for different breeds and if that particular brand is recommended for cats or not.

5.    How to pick the best tracking system

When browsing through the many dog tracking systems that are available, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you make the best pick:

·         Size: The size of your dog will play a large role in the size of the tracker you choose. Some of the more luxury trackers that include additional features on health and activity levels can be too heavy for small breeds.

·         Function and accuracy: If you've got an active pup that's prone to running all over town, choose a tracker that updates every few seconds so you can be sure to catch them as quickly as possible. If your dog simply strolls down the street at a relaxed pace, you probably don't need such frequent updates. Likewise, some trackers have long battery lives that are great for dogs that seem to always slip away at the least expected moments, while others are better for attaching to their collar right before you go on a walk.

·         Extra features: Aside from geolocating your pet, many of these GPS trackers include a variety of additional features that help you keep track of your furry friend's health and activity levels. If you're looking for something that does more than just alert you when your dog makes a break for it, consider a model that also includes some more data collection.

So here you have enough information to try one of these trackers.  Hopefully this puts your mind at rest and makes your walks with your furry friend, less stressful, worrying that they might escape and get lost.  Click on one and give them a try!
